OEM vs. Aftermarket Pool Filter Cartridges

You can replace an original pool filter cartridge with a compatible aftermarket cartridge in the same filter housing. The replacement must be made for your model, but it does not have to carry the same brand name as the tank.

What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket?

OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer. A genuine Hayward cartridge specified for a Hayward filter, for example, is an OEM replacement. You are buying the equipment brand's replacement part.

Aftermarket cartridges come from another manufacturer. Excel Filters, Pleatco, Unicel and Filbur make replacements for existing pool filter systems. Each manufacturer uses its own part numbers and identifies the original cartridges its products replace.

Does OEM mean better filtration?

OEM identifies the brand, not a filtration rating. Two cartridges made for the same housing can use different filter media, end caps and pleat support.
